About the Event

We have seen that police do not prevent crime or keep people safe, but rather police threaten our communities with constant surveillance and violence that disproportionately affects Black and Indigenous peoples as well as that experiencing poverty. We also know that to keep people safe, our community needs access to affordable housing, employment opportunities, health care, mental health services, education, arts programs, community centres, and other social services.

Let’s come together as a community to discuss why we need to defund the police as well as our visions and roles for a police-free future in Nogojiwanong! Afterwards, we will take collective action by letting our voices be heard by the city council, our MP, and the Police Services Board!

Peterborough City Council is holding an important budget meeting on Monday, November 2nd, 2020 where they will vote to set the Budget Guidelines for 2021. We need to let them know that we demand that there be NO MORE increases in the Peterborough Police Services budget. We also want to demand that funding for harm reduction services be funnelled directly to the Peterborough Drug Strategy, and that police not be involved in the strategy in any capacity.

We know that we have the power to create change if we mobilize and work together.

We acknowledge that we are on the traditional lands of the Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee covered by the Williams treaty of 1923. We strive to honour and be in a respectful relationship with the land and in solidarity with the Indigenous Peoples of this land as they resist ongoing colonial violence and demand #LandBack.
